Turkey Vulture  Cathartes aura

Turkey Vulture  Cathartes aura

Beautiful on the wing the Turkey Vulture soars high over open country searching for its main diet of carrion.  Seeking fresh carrion by sight and other scavenger activity, it also uses its sense of smell and can detect prey hidden below forest canopies. Compared to other birds the part of its brain that processes smell is much larger, allowing it a heightened ability to detect odors.
Larger than its relative the Black Vulture and up to 32 in. tall with a wingspan of near 70 in. the Turkey Vulture is also the more solitary of the two.
