Red-shouldered Hawk  buteo lineatus

Red-shouldered Hawk  buteo lineatus

The Red-shouldered Hawk is divided into five subspecies, the northern form being the largest while the southern Florida form is the palest.
Favoring woodlands near water, this forest dwelling hawk nests up to 65 ft. above ground in deciduous and mixed forests with tall trees and a clear under story.
The Great Horned Owl will take nestlings of the Red-shouldered Hawk and occasionally the reverse takes place, chasing the owl from its territory often with co-operation from crows.
Usually hunting from a perch it feeds on small mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds.
