Hairy Woodpecker  Picoides villosus

Hairy Woodpecker  Picoides villosus

From sea level to high in the mountains, accepting a wide variety of habitats with large trees present the Hairy Woodpecker is the most widespread woodpecker in North America.  Differing in size and bill shape the Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers are very similar in pattern.  Occurring together throughout most of their ranges the Downy Woodpecker uses the smaller branches while the Hairy Woodpecker typically uses the tree trunks.
Although it consumes mostly insects, it feeds predominately on wood boring beetles; also it will eat some berries nuts and seeds and is a frequent visitor to feeders.  Attracted to the excavations of the Pileated Woodpecker it often forages in association with the larger woodpecker taking insects it misses.
