Bobolink   Dolichonyx oryxivorous

The only member of its genus, the Bobolink is a small New World blackbird occupying pastures, open meadows and hayfields.  Although hay fields provide suitable nesting habitat they are subject to multiple harvests, often as young are still in the nest, not allowing them to fledge.  In the field behind my house I rarely view them during the nesting season, although I hear their spangled, popping calls mixing with whistles and multiple sounds as if coming from more than one individual bird.  These songs give this species its common name.
Residing in southern Canada and the northern U.S. the Bobolink is a long distant migrant; traveling to Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay for the winter.
